Audrey Amrein-Beardsley, MLFTC Professor, Host
Audrey Amrein-Beardsley received her PhD from Arizona State University in 2002. Awarded tenure in 2010 as Exemplar, she is currently a professor at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. Her research interests include education policy, research methods and more; specifically high-stakes tests and value-added measurements and systems. In addition, she researches aspects of teacher quality and teacher education. Recently invited to speak before the U.S. Senate Education Committee about the intended and unintended effects of the SAS Education Value-Added Assessment System (EVAAS), Amrein-Beardsley has also been nominated for the American Educational Research Association Early Career Award.
David Berliner, Regents Professor, Steering Committee Member
David Berliner is Regents Professor of Education at Arizona State University. He has taught at the universities of Arizona and Massachusetts, at MLFTC and Stanford University, as universities abroad. Berliner is a member of the National Academy of Education, a fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and a past president of both the American Educational Research Association and the Division of Educational Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his distinguished contributions. He is co-author (with B. J. Biddle) of the best seller, “The Manufactured Crisis,” co-author (with Ursula Casanova) of “Putting Research to Work,” and co-author (with N. L. Gage) of the textbook “Educational Psychology,” now in its sixth edition. His newest book, “Collateral Damage” (with Sharon Nichols), is about the corruption of professional educators through high-stakes testing. Berliner has authored more than 200 published articles, technical reports and book chapters.
Carole G. Basile, MLFTC Dean, Steering Committee Member
Carole G. Basile is professor and dean of Mary Lou Fulton College at Arizona State University. Prior to joining ASU, Basile was dean and professor in the College of Education at the University of Missouri St. Louis. Her academic career has included grants and research related to math and science education, teacher education, community engagement and environmental education with funding from the Department of Education, the National Governors’ Association, and the National Science Foundation, the National Education Association and the National Commission for Teaching and America’s Future. She has published numerous articles, books, book chapters and technical papers in these areas, and has received outstanding teaching awards for her ability to teach using experiential learning techniques. Her community work is also extensive, as she has actively partnered with many urban school districts, informal and nonprofit community education and social service entities, constituents from business and industry, and workforce and economic development initiatives. She also has 12 years of experience in business and industry in the areas of sales, management, marketing, and corporate training and development. Research interests include intraprenuership in teacher education, school and community partnerships focused on design and innovation and integrated models.
Noelle Paufler, Researcher and Website Manager
Noelle A. Paufler received her PhD in Educational Policy and Evaluation from Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. As an assistant for Audrey Amrein-Beardsley, Paufler conducts research and provides technical support for Inside the Academy. Her research interests include educational policy, the communication of educational research and its relative impact on policy, and more specifically, the impact of standards and accountability systems on practitioners in local contexts.
Ken Fagan, Video Producer and Editor
Ken Fagan is a videographer, editor and producer of promotional, documentary, educational and news programming. Fagan began his career freelancing in the motion picture and live television industry before receiving his BA in broadcast journalism. He worked for 10 years in the TV news industry as a videotape editor and news photographer. Since 2001, Fagan has been the producer, videographer and editor on multiple video programs supporting the ASU community. In 2003, he received a master’s degree in mass communication from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, producing his first half-hour historical documentary. Currently, Fagan works for ASU Marketing and Strategic Communications producing news programming and promotional pieces to support the university, and as a freelance documentary filmmaker.
Michael Hailey, Multimedia Developer
Mike Hailey has been with the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College for over 10 years, primarily serving as a Multimedia Developer. He currently works as part of the Marketing and Advancement team, which assists in creating knowledge, mobilizing people, and taking action to improve education. Outside of work, Mike has a passion for mentoring and coaching youth in his local community.
